These reading guides are intended to help people with their research; split into seven different categories they contain commentaries, essays and finding guides. These guides will be regularly updated until the end of the Liverpool in Print Project in early 2009. - Archive Sources - these are reproductions of leaflets available within the Liverpool Record Office. They are intended as preliminary guides to conducting research in the record office.
- Culture - covers topics such as popular music, theatres, art galleries and sport.
- Maritime and port history - Liverpool is famed for its maritime history, this topic covers areas such as shipping companies, emigration and the slave trade.
- Politics - covers all matters political from William Huskisson to Militant Labour.
- Society - A widespread topic covering areas as diverse as public health, community newspapers, housing and young people.
- Urban history, building and planning - contains information about the growth of the city, local architecture and notable buildings.
- Work, business and the economy - the economic history of the city includes business biographies, company magazines, information on trade associations and the overhead railway.
